On Sunday, July 23, 1967 Sheren and Ross were asked to ride a friend home. Although they saw the fires and the looting, taking them home was no problem, but on the trip returning home, they encountered a crowd beating a man on Woodward Avenue.
Sheren, who was pregnant, pleaded with her husband to get away from the crowd when a shot rang out. The bullet from a pistol, struck the left rear door, and splintered. It sent fragments flying into the front seat hitting Sheren. Ross frantically drove off, screeching down a street they finally came to a fire station. Transferring Sheren from the car into an ambulance and they rushed her to Detroit General Hospital, where she died at 1:35 a.m.
